With hopes of a new studio album for 2004, Dead guitarist Bob Weir is looking for new musical directions for his other band, Ratdog. Weir wants to incorporate rap into the group's sound in some way, but he told us there may also be a classical music component: "I'm looking into the possibility of working with a small, relatively well-known modern classical outfit. I don't want to name any names yet, because it's still on the drawing boards. They're a string quartet, and they can play electrified, so that I would be trying to work them in so that we could go anywhere from Bartok to hip-hop."
Ratdog's other major change this year was the departure of founding bassist Rob Wasserman, who was replaced by Robin Sylvester.
Ratdog's next show is tonight (Thursday, October 16th) at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia.
Weir turns 56 years old today.
