First Time You Saw a Video Game?

Post by Dad » Thu Dec 08, 2022 9:37 pm

So some of you fellow oldies might relate

A couple of us walked out of High School in NJ one morning and split up a couple of pieces of paper.

Bout an hour later, one of my friends starts going off on he saw a tv that you could control and play ping pong. The rest of us thought (?) that was ridiculous and no such thing existed and told him he needed to back off for a little while.

He got his Irish up and wouldn’t let it go. He and I stuck out our thumbs and headed down out of the hills towards North Plainfield so he could prove he was right. Sure as shit - in the little “lobby” of a diner on Rt.22 in North Plainfield was one of those big pong games.

I was amazed and told him I was sorry for doubting him, and that was the first tv I ever saw that you could control.

Had to be early 1973 I’m guessing

Pong for me at my cousins' house was my first. They also had the first motorized bicycle I ever saw. One went on to make a killing buying up internet domain names very early on to sell and develop websites. The other travels around the world building satellites.

I am by no means a gamer. Really the only one I like is football and I don't have it or play it but I usually will give someone a game if it is convenient. I imagine I am missing out of some cool ones but it is not my thing.

How about a GD video game where you have to score tickets and party favors, have beer spilled on you and have to shush show talkers. You could select a single show or a whole tour. You could build hippie chicks with or without armpit and leg hair. You could select guests or build your own band configuration. You could also select the harshness of the police presence in the lot. You could be a virtual vendor, gate crasher, VIP, or backstage pass holder. Piss meter may have you losing points when you must go during a spectacular part of the show.

Pong was cool at the time.

Playing Pong was the way I finally realized that I was the least coordinated human being on the planet. Still can't play that fucker.

Watching Bozo's Circus on WGN, there was a segment called TV Powww where a kid who called in said " Powww !" Into the phone to control the game or shoot at whatever target in order to win prizes. Here's a clip from 1979. At the time some cutting edge technology !

My dad bought us a Pong/Breakout machine when i was real little. I was hooked since.

Eventually we upgraded to an Intellivision System (which i still have). Then once on my own i got a nintendo, then Play Station 2, which evolved into 3, and currently 4. Eventually i will get 5.

My buddy Richie Sexton had pong hooked up to his black & white in the basement ~ mid 70's. The Sextons were the cool parents who didn't give a shit what we did down there & never told the other parents about the skunky smell that floated upstairs. That's the only home video game I've ever played. Played a ton of arcade games and of course, pinball back in the day.

Pong. At my neighbours house. The year they came out. My Dad heard us talking about Pong one day shortly after and the company he worked for manufactured a competing version. He said .. "oh, you actually want one of those?". Brought one home the next day.

Loved it. I still play computer games several times per week. My love of computer games taught me to learn how computers work. Which in turn led to my career. So don't let anybody tell you computer games are useless.

Same, but we branched to Atari.

I never got comfortable with the intellivision controller ... which a friend had.

Ready Player One is a great book (movie not so much) ... audio version is read by actor who plays Wesley Crusher on SNG.

Same. Pong. Hooked on the "catch" game. Then atari, then odyssey, then colecovision, then not sure which came first sega or nintendo. I was always a pinball guy at the arcades, I loved Sorcerer and Pinbot.

1979-80

Friend’s dad had an early Apple. What was one of the firsts? Apple IIe? He had games on it.

Then Atari/Intellivision. Everyone had something by 81-82

(Edit…it was ‘81, for the first Apples I saw).

I just don’t see 1972-3 being real. Not calling you out at all, cuz the timeline is real….but I can’t remember a real pc until ‘79-80. I lived near an air force base. Tech was around.

So the early 70s are really when games started?!!?

The first bunch were the large arcade versions. Bars would put them in and people would wait their turn

Break Out and Pong are the first 2 i remember. First system i remember owning was a 2600 and then we had a Coleco and then a 7800. My final Atari system was the Jaguar. Been debating buying the new Atari VCS system seeing that they are finally releasing Jaguar games for it. Yes i like a system from the past that was a dud upon its release.

The mini arcade games from the 80’s were killer. We had the mini Frogger arcade game. There were other ones. So much fun
