How many of you DeadHeads were metal heads first?

Post by zimmy jr » Mon Sep 06, 2021 3:26 pm

From that 1st concert thread, sounds like a bunch. When I was in high school Blue Öyster Cult, Rush, Ted Nugent, Budgie, etc were my jam. Then everything changed in that big field in Lewiston Maine. 41 years ago today, as a matter of fact. ✌😍

My first few bands I was really into was Queen, Black Sabbath, Zep, Zappa... Dire Straits, Traveling Wilburys, George Harrison, Tom Petty etc. Never really was into Metal, did go to a bunch of Ozzfests, but I only went to see Ozzy (well Judas Priest was pretty awesome @ Ozzfest one year as well).

Yup. Ozzy, sabbath, Metallica, AC/DC, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Led Zeppelin.

First Dead I ever heard besides radio stuff/ Touch of Grey was when my uncle played me Reckoning on vinyl. I remember hearing “Don’t murder me. I beg of you don’t murder me.”, and thinking it was pretty bad ass.

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush.
The Deadheads gather at the rim of the volcano to dance and sing joyful songs in honor of their fallen hero.

My first concert was Ironmaiden, January 1987 at the age of 14. So yea, metalhead first. I started with Rush/Zep/Ozzy/Purple/VH a couple of years before that, then transition to Maiden/Priest, onto Metallica/Megadeth/Slayer/Motohead and then into my punk/hardcore phase.

My love of LSD is what honestly turned me onto the Dead around the age of 17, but I still love all of that music even if the listens are rare these days.

Not much of that noise around in 1969 when Live/Dead changed my life. Listened to lots of Beatles, Kinks, Traffic.
We will understand it better bye and bye.

I made deals with 3 separate guys that I'd attend a heavy metal show of their choice with them if they would go to a GD show with me. All 3 liked the GD shows and 2 became full on Dead Heads. I have occasionally attended metal shows throughout the years, but can't fully get it.

Some of us have a loose interpretation of what heavy metal is. Will allow sabbath, but most of the others?

We had a good buddy who was a massive audiophile and loved heavy shit (black flag, German indusrtial, just heavy heavy shit). We bring doses over every weekend and say “ok, tune for tune, everyone gets a turn, but you better come with the goods because 2 out of 3 down votes gets the boot”. A few months in we easily won him over. I don’t mind heavy shit, but it at least needs a melody. It also made everyone be thoughtful in their choices, playing the best each style had to offer

THIS and Saturday Night Fever, Off the wall by Michael Jackson, and Van Halen 1. Add Skeletons from the Closet and you have the first five records I bought myself.
Early rock influences definitely include Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zep. Hard rock, yes, metal no.

I was the opposite as Dylan was my first love. The transition to the GD wasn't hard.

Never really got into metal, but we used to see metal bands in the 70s because tickets were cheap and it was something to do. It was good to be a kid when most shows were $5 or less.

Absolutely!!! Was a kid/teen in the 80’s and embraced the Metal rebellion. Had the long hair, jean jacket covered with patches, lived in my flannels and Carolina boots. Always liked and listened to classic rock on the radio so I was well rounded in all rock music. What we considered real metal(Metallica, Slayer,Megadeth, etc…) rarely got much airplay if ever back then in Philly.

As I got into my later teens I started to mellow out a bit probably due to partying a lot and fell in love with the mindset of the the deadhead world and the scene. The improvisation of the music took me places metal never offered.

My love for metal never completely faded away, I still caught shows over the years and have been on a mission to see as many of the metal bands I missed while following the dead before they’re gone.
