Stones to Retire Brown Sugar......

Post by friki » Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:54 am

Your mileage may vary.....

Rolling Stones phase out popular hit 'Brown Sugar'

(CNN)The Rolling Stones have retired their classic song "Brown Sugar," which begins with a slave narrative and sexualizes young Black women.
Mick Jagger told the Los Angeles Times that the band had phased the song out of their concert lineups.
"We've played 'Brown Sugar' every night since 1970, so sometimes you think, 'We'll take that one out for now and see how it goes,'" he said. "We might put it back in."

Keith Richards told the Times he hopes to be able to play some version of the song in the future.

"I'm trying to figure out with the sisters quite where the beef is. Didn't they understand this was a song about the horrors of slavery? But they're trying to bury it. At the moment I don't want to get into conflicts with all of this sh**," he said. "But I'm hoping that we'll be able to resurrect the babe in her glory somewhere along the track."

Released in 1971, the opening lines of "Brown Sugar" reference a woman being sold into slavery and whipped around midnight. The chorus in the song includes "brown sugar," referring to Black women, asking "How come you taste so good?"
Critics have railed against the song for years, condemning its violent and stereotypical portrayal of Black women.

"I never would write that song now," Jagger told Rolling Stone in 1995. "I would probably censor myself."
The Rolling Stones are currently on their "No Filter Tour," with stops in North American cities scheduled through November. It is the first tour for the group since the death of the band's late drummer Charlie Watts.

Lyrics

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should

Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' where it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should, now

Ah, get along, brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, got me feelin' now, brown sugar just like a black girl should

I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, brown sugar just like a young girl should, yeah

I said yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
How come you... how come you taste so good?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
Just like a... just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo

I admit I never read the lyrics before now

The imagery in my mind based upon what I have always heard was akin to a story about a brothel in New Orleans and I never equated it with slavery. I likened it to Jagger enjoying black women - and yes “Brown Sugar” is a tasty treat for a white boy

Thanks for ruining a staple of “classic rock”

Well...by this logic Mr. Weir needs to shelve Mexicali Blues ASAP. I don’t think the cancel police have gotten to the Grateful Dead yet.
Lots of songs about gun violence too.

wow never knew the lyrics were so HORRIBLE!!!

good move to drop it.

FYI Weir could change the lyric to "just eighteen".

Skydog slaver knows he's doing alright
This is wrong. I heard somebody on the radio read these wrong lyrics too.

It is "Scarred old slaver". Not Skydog.

"Scarred" as in somebody with a lot of scars or emotionally scarred.

I have known the lyrics since I was a kid. I agree with Keith, this song is about the horrors of slavery. It doesn't celebrate slavery.

But for sure, park the song for a while. It is out of step with the current times.

Fixed it. Skydog made no sense, but I was clueless and snipped it from a website, so it had to be right.

Thanks.

I'll admit to not being entirely aware of the lyrics and just thinking it was about hooking up with a black girl. Funny how times change, just like you couldn't release Blazing Saddles this year. Even Mick said he probably would have written it differently today.

Progress? Probably? :-k

All the pop music lyrics that personally disgust me are perfectly ok for people to keep singing. To be EQUITABLE, all music must be banned. I am calling BS on anybody who tells anybody else what not sing. If you don't like the song, don't listen to it.

The cancel police are now scouring through thousands of old songs to find those they consider to be offensive or out of touch with current times. There are many many tunes that are waiting for the detectives to find them.
After listening to Brown Sugar hundreds of times I always thought it had to do with having a little bit of fun with some crazy black girls.

Has anyone here read the lyrics to Jimi Hendrix’s Hey Joe??? This one is definitely on the chopping block if you ask me!

Why, its a song about somebody trying to stop domestic violence and then somebody fleeing to Mexico after the violence.

Wait till the cancel culture pays attention hears this one
(what a bunch of self righteous assholes some people are)
Quick close the museums and burn the art so all the progressive can smell their our own farts

Got a sweet black angel
Got a pin up girl
Got a sweet black angel
Up upon my wall
Well, she ain't no singer
And she ain't no star
But she sure talk good
And she move so fast
But the gal in danger
Yeah, de gal in chains
But she keep on pushin'
Would ya take her place?
She countin' up de minutes
She countin' up de days
She's a sweet black angel, woh
Not a sweet black slave
Ten little niggers
Sittin' on de wall
Her brothers been a fallin'
Fallin' one by one
For a judge they murdered
And a judge they stole
Now de judge he gonna judge her
For all dat he's worth
Well de gal in danger
De gal in chains
But she keep on pushin'
Would you do the same?
She countin' up de minutes
She countin' up de days
She's a sweet black angel
Not a gun toting teacher
Not a Red lovin' school mom
Ain't someone gonna free her
Free de sweet black slave
Free de sweet black slave

Times change and social mores change with the times. It has always been thus. The whole 'cancel culture' meme strikes me as BS. It is nothing new. They weren't forced to 'cancel' the song, they took it off the setlist because they thought it didn't work that well these days. It's an artistic decision and such decisions are nothing new. You and I are no longer blamed for killing the Kennedys either.

And no one should bemoan any change in their setlists. It's a list in need of change. Who cares what the reason is.

I think this is a great move. I'm ready for Bob to stop singing about hooking up with 14 year olds in Mexicali Blues, too. Some songs don't stand the test of time, and that's OK. =;

I am all for retiring songs we are all sick of. Not fade away was a reason to leave later dead shows.
It is the new holier than thou attitude that stinks it goes way beyond just the stones tunes

I would just disagree with the you and I are to blame for killing the kennedys, this is more about the masses always wanting human sacrifices. That line has struck me as meaning that. It is the same as brittany spears, or lindsey lohan or countless other celebrities we sickly love watching the ones we elevate fail and die. Just change the name it still applies.

I could not disagree more
Art is either art or it is not
not condoning the behavior
Censorship is never good. Why not remove "blow him straight to hell" from whafrat after all it is condoning murder? or any countless other lyrics
You are either all in or its fascist if you ask me
