I'm so sorry for your loss.
My brother in law started on Oxy long ago and moved to Heroin once Oxy became harder to get. He is the sweetest, most thoughtful and intelligent guy you'll ever meet when he's not using, and a complete train wreck when he is. He has put his/our family through hell with his actions, and he is his own worst critic when it comes to being addicted.
Heroin is the devil.

I can only hope that opiate dependency becomes less taboo and that it is something everyone can talk about and agree to find a solution on.

Just having cleared the hospital, it's bizzare, some of the Health Care Professionals don't want you in pain, the other half won't give you a narc if your screaming.

Some where down the line we have to acknowledge that addiction of opiates is real, and they do have a purpose. For the 24 hours post surgery, they kept me pain reduced and sedated. So they have their place. If your prescribing long term narc as meds, you as a HC Pro have to acknowledge the addiction tendencies and instead of rushing to ban pain meds, perhaps the case workers need to assist the patient through reduction and elimination of the drug.

As for me meds in the hospital, or out of the hospital.... no brainer, get me the F outta here.

All,

I just read this thread through. Very sad, mental health and addiction, physical ailments and pain. It touches so many lives.

Who would know what to do if they found someone close to them ODing?

I would have freaked out in the past but I just took my first AED/CPR class. Since opiates are a related epidemic the teacher went into what to do. You would have to have this and you would have to administer it.
