I have no words.
Hunter was the one who provided them for me.
He wrote what we all feel and always will.
These songs will forever fill the air.
Our world is darkened a bit, but Heaven just got brighter.
Him and Jer are cackling and grinning.

Rest in peace, Robert.

I had an estimate in Nederland this morning and decided to throw on my second RatDog show (7-21-07) for the drive from Golden > Ned. I had heard a great version of Row Jimmy on XM prior to switching over to RatDog, which, I suppose you could say, was the inspiration for my decision. Anyways, the drive is through some of the "less traveled" mountain highways from the front range. It was a beautiful, clear morning with temps right around 65-70 and a particularly relaxing, gorgeous drive as all of the leaves on the aspens are beginning to turn from green to yellow. I cherry picked the following tracks from the show - Liberty, Tennessee Jed, Lazy River Road, Bird Song, Terrapin, and Franklin's Tower. Franklin's was finishing as I arrived back to our office in Golden. After I parked I took out my phone and saw the news....wow.

Rest in peace, Robert. May the four winds blow you (safely) home again :ratdog
A short while back the door flung wide, we all saw good luck on the other side (~);}

My goodness the bells of heaven now ring. The writer of the songs has left away. There is no where now to turn, now that the singer and he are gone.

Does God look down on the boys in the barroom? / Mainly forsaken but surely not judged / Jacks, Kings and Aces, their faces in wine / Do Lord deliver our kind.

RIP Robert, thank you so much.
Knock it back, man, You can't sip this stuff at eight in the morning. That's Happy Hour shit.

I wish I could draw, I'd love to do a cartoon of Hunter arriving at the pearly gates with pen and paper in hand. Garcia would be on the other side with a guitar in his hand and the caption would say:

"Your finally here man. I got 24 years worth of songs that I need lyrics for ..."

Knowing (a little) about the Hunter/Garcia work process, it's probably more like Hunter saying to Jerry, "Now that I'm here, I've got 24 years of lyrics I need music for."

Not sure why exactly, but this passage by Hunter came to mind:

https://speakola.com/eulogy/for-jerry-g ... unter-1995

A surreal sidelight: Weir went to India and scattered a handful of your ashes in the Ganges as a token of your worldwide stature. He took a lot of flak from the fans for it, which must have hurt. A bunch of them decided to scapegoat him, presumably needing someplace to misdirect their anger over the loss of you. In retrospect, I think Weir was hardest hit of the old crowd by your death. I take these things in my stride, though I admit to a rough patch here and there. But Bob took it right on the chin. Shock was written all over his face for a long time, for any with eyes to see.

There were days
and there were days
and there were days between
Summer flies and August dies
the world grows dark and mean
Comes the shimmer of the moon
on black infested trees
the singing man is at his song
the holy on their knees
the reckless are out wrecking
the timid plead their pleas
No one knows much more of this
than anyone can see anyone can see
There were days
and there were days
and there were days besides
when phantom ships with phantom sails
set to sea on phantom tides
Comes the lightning of the sun
on bright unfocused eyes
the blue of yet another day
a springtime wet with sighs
a hopeful candle lingers
in the land of lullabies
where headless horsemen vanish
with wild and lonely cries lonely cries
There were days
and there were days
and there were days I know
when all we ever wanted
was to learn and love and grow
Once we grew into our shoes
we told them where to go
walked halfway around the world
on promise of the glow
stood upon a mountain top
walked barefoot in the snow
gave the best we had to give
how much we'll never know we'll never know
There were days
and there were days
and there were days between
polished like a golden bowl
the finest ever seen
Hearts of Summer held in trust
still tender, young and green
left on shelves collecting dust
not knowing what they mean
valentines of flesh and blood
as soft as velveteen
hoping love would not forsake
the days that lie between lie between
