RIP McCoy Tyner
RIP McCoy Tyner
He was a jazz pianist that had some influence on Bob. Something about trying to be like McCoy's left hand when comping. I try to be 1/20th of one of those hands when I play Favorite Things with my wife.

Re: RIP McCoy Tyner
a grate obit with details on 'A Love Supreme'.
a man who took music and added to the palate.
“What you don’t play is sometimes as important as what you do play,” Mr. Tyner told the pianist and radio host Marian McPartland in 1983. “I would leave space, which wouldn’t identify the chord so definitely to the point that it inhibited your other voicings.”

Re: RIP McCoy Tyner
Someone told me back when I was about 17 that Jerry was into jazz. The place I bought my first decent guitar,Lark St. Music had some albums for sale. A young jazz guitarist died and his mom brought a bunch of his stuff in. I think he died in a car crash.
The albums I got were by McCoy,Groove Holmes,Charles Lloyd, and Sonny Stitt. The McCoy Tyner album left the greatest impression although Charles Lloyd was pretty up there. His album had Jack DeJohnette and Keith Jarret.
Later on,I discover Coltrane and realize that McCoy was so important to his music. Then I discovered how important Coltrane was to Miles. I found Miles on a few Charlie Parker albums but I believe Dizzy was a greater partner for Bird.
It's all so much a part of the whole American song book. It's kinda cool when DeadCo hits on Favorite Things or Milestones for a moment. That Misty sound check was cool too.
