Re: New York Rangers 2022/23
This just in from New York Rangers insider Larry Brooks: Former 28th overall selection Nils Lundkvist has reportedly informed the team that he will not report to training camp later this month and would like a fresh start with a new NHL team.
From Brooks' latest report for The New York Post:
The Rangers are engaged in an accelerated effort to trade Nils Lundkvist after being notified that the 22-year-old Swedish defenseman is unlikely to report to camp in the absence of a deal, The Post has been told by multiple sources.
The Post has learned that general manager Chris Drury has been working with Lundkvist’s agent, Claude Lemieux, in order to effect a trade to an organization in which the Swede would have a better opportunity to challenge for a top-four spot and role as a power-play quarterback.
The 22 year old Lundkvist has been essentially blocked in the Rangers' system but more established defensemen like Adam Fox, Jacob Trouba, K'Andre Miller, Braden Schneider and Ryan Lindgren. In the case of Miller, Schneider and Lindgren, Lundkvist has been an equal or better pedigree, but has failed to gain the trust of head coach Gerard Gallant.
Lundkvist put up just one goal and four points in 25 games with the Rangers last season, but three goals and 15 points in 34 games with the team's AHL affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack.
More from Brooks on what the Rangers are looking for in return:
At the same time, though, the Blueshirts are seeking a semblance of equal value in return for Lundkvist, the slick, puck-moving, offense-oriented defenseman who is generously listed at 5-10, 187 pounds.
The Blueshirts, though, could certainly use a young, top-nine-type center who might grow with the organization. That is believed to be Drury’s target as they deal with this latest situation involving a young European unhappy with his plight.
A top nine center? How about a top six center? The Vancouver Canucks have a potential J.T. Miller trade locked and loaded and the Rangers, of course, are no strangers to Miller. Could these two teams reconnect on a potential deal with Miller and Lundkvist as the main pieces?
enough with this soap opera

Re: New York Rangers 2022/23
so...
right after the cup final, the sports books put the blue shirts at 25:1
I don't usually place my bet until Labor Day
I've been looking at the line fairly regularly
I pull the sheet whenever I'm actually in a casino that has a sports book
(I don't go all that often - usually when we want dinner at certain restaurants)
All summer the odds have been dropping
two weeks ago they hovered between 15/10:1 - so I decided I'd lay the bet this weekend
I went to a new casino that just opened in Sparks and the sports book vendor offered 18:1
yeah I put my little $20 down (would pay for a great dinner the night they win!)
Yesterday - I was at a William Hill sports book and the sheet said 10:1

Re: New York Rangers 2022/23
Nils Lundkvist was traded to the Dallas Stars by the New York Rangers on Monday.
The Rangers will receive a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft. If the Stars' own first round pick in 2023 is in the top 10, New York will get Dallas' own first-round selection in 2024 instead, and that pick will be unprotected.
The 22-year-old defenseman had four points (one goal, three assists) in 25 games for the Rangers last season, and 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) in 34 games for Hartford of the American Hockey League.
Lundkvist was a first-round pick (No. 28) by the Rangers at the 2018 NHL Draft.
"Nils is a skilled, right-handed shot defenseman that adjusted to the North American game this past season and has a high ceiling," Stars general manager Jim Nil said. "We felt that adding a creative player like Nils to our defensive group was necessary, and he has a tremendous opportunity to establish himself as an everyday, impact defenseman at the NHL level."
New York will receive a third-round pick in 2025 instead of Dallas' fourth-round selection if Lundkvist has 55 points over the next two seasons.
Problem solved

I know we have a ton of guys hanging around in camp...
but
no Breadman in the first two games?
Can I get a look at what Sammy Blaise looks like a year out from PK Subban?
damn
and just why the fuck is Louie Domingue here
I understand needing an NHL experienced caddy for Shesty
but - Halak is fine enough for that - the kid they threw into the net
the 2nd half of the game against the Islanders showed he was overmatched
never a good look kid, to be spinning like a top looking for the puck
Vesey looks like he's in shape - I thought he was a good player when he was here
he played his role on those teams well...
he always wanted to play in NY - I guess Jersey doesn't offer the same panache
Gallant likes veterans on the PK - they'll give him a cap friendly job

Domingue is the guy who will not go away He will be in Hartford the whole baring an injury
When Halak is good he is good and when he's bad watch out If Igor gets hurt it could be a problem.
Gallant is going to have make the call on Vesey- does he go with one of the kids or a guy who has NHL experience

Re: New York Rangers 2022/23
Jimmy Vesey agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Rangers on Sunday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The forward was in training camp on a professional tryout contract, and had three points (one goal, two assists) and six blocked shots in five preseason games.
The 29-year-old had 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 68 games with the Devils last season after attending their training camp on a PTO and signing a one-year contract Oct. 10. Vesey has established himself as an elite penalty killer and ranked second among Devils forwards in short-handed time on ice (137:15) and led the team in fewest power-play goals against per 60 minutes (6.15; minimum 70 minutes TOI)
Vesey played his first three NHL seasons with the Rangers, signing as a free agent on Aug. 19, 2016, after winning the 2016 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in NCAA men's ice hockey for Harvard University. He had 90 points (50 goals, 40 assists) in 240 regular-season games with the Rangers, including a career high in points (35) and assists (18), and tied his career high in goals (17) in 81 games in 2018-19.
He has 135 points (72 goals, 63 assists) in 422 regular-season games with the Rangers, Sabres, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Devils. He has five points (one goal, four assists) in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
He is going to have to bring it every night or down to Hartford he will go

he's "cheap" for now
I agree... he's on a short leash depending on how his defense is on the PK
if they start giving up a ton... they'll find someone else
the upside is that he had moderate success in NYC
he's played with Kreider and Zibanejad in the past - I presume they asked at least Kreids about him (character in the room stuff, beyond what management saw when he was here)
could be a nice piece - he's never going to be a top six star and he tried to get paid like it in the past
now I think he's chasing a cup - I hope so

Nice start 2-0
Tonight, in the peg
Rick Bowness tested positive for COVID-19 and will not coach the Jets in their season opener against the New York Rangers on Friday (8 p.m. ET; TSN3, MSGSN, ESPN+, SN NOW).
Bowness was hired as Jets coach on July 3 to replace Dave Lowry, who was 26-22-6 in 54 games after Paul Maurice resigned Dec. 17.
Associate coach Scott Arniel will coach Winnipeg until Bowness returns.

a win is 2 points - every time
Igor
GAA 2.68
SV% 0.905
fairness says the sample size for the season is too small
but....
driving it down comes down to two things...
is it Team Defense that does need a little tightening for sure
or
is it Igor
Power Play is lethal at the moment
Winning faceoffs makes that easier - doesn't it

then I looked at the recent record we had against them - something like 7 wins in a row
odds and hockey gods don't really like long streaks
they opened the season 100% on the PK
yup - we really didn't need a coach who sets up the picket fence at the blue line
David Quinn is a good coach who got the shaft here
He preached defense 1st
DEFENSE wins championships, because it can show up every night
opposed to the offense which can and does disappear for stretches of time
Paging Mr. Kreider... Mr. Zibanejad ... Paging Mr. Fox
I thought the numbers were going to be in our favor on that last power play
it was something like 19 straight kills - I figured we were due
but the breadman picked up a trip 15 seconds in to kill the opportunity
LOSERS POINTS SUCK
but it beats getting nothing for the night

Re: New York Rangers 2022/23
Jaroslav Halak made 16 saves. He has lost his first two starts this season, including 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 14, when he allowed three goals on 33 shots.
8 Goals in 2 games
Did not agree when I heard they got Halak as a backup
His best days are far behind him

we let the kid Kinkaid go for money
I wonder what we have in Hartford (Not Louie )
I want a backup looking to prove they can be a starter
not a starter who's hanging around to get paid
this team folds when down midway in the 3rd
NOT ACCEPTABLE
time for the "new" leadership group to take charge of the room
we're here for a purpose gentlemen
every time Chytil takes a step forward he gets hurt
availability is a players' single greatest asset
(wasn't his fault he got clocked in the head again - not the other players' either - it happens when you turn different ways to see the puck)

LOSERS POINTS SUCK
on the other hand we went toe to toe with the stanley cup chumps
Igor made a rare error playing the puck and it ended up in the back of the net
it happens
(another reminder that we need to, do away with the Brodeur Rule)
Props to Georgiev
he accomplished what he wanted to show NY management
I feel bad it didn't work out for him here
it's tough when there is a franchise goalie in front of you
(ask Cam Talbot, Anti Raanta and others)
Other than his misadventure in the corner - Igor looked really good last night - better than his
last couple of starts
NEED a big game from Halak tonight
