Craig Anderson will have a chance to fill the veteran goalie role the Washington Capitals envisioned for Henrik Lundqvist and compete for playing time in training camp.

The 39-year-old signed a professional tryout agreement with the Capitals on Sunday after Lundqvist announced Dec. 17 he is unable to play this season because of a heart condition. Lundqvist said Monday that he has scheduled open-heart surgery.

I understand the need to grab as much cash as possible
(it actually helps the players with regards to the escrow fund to get to 50/50)
But I find it rather distasteful

then again I lived thru the Patrick, Adams, Smythe and Norris divisions :rofl

Former Edmonton Oilers head coach John Muckler has passed away at age 86.

The #Oilers Hockey Club is saddened to report the passing of our former Head Coach, five-time Stanley Cup champion & dear friend of the organization John Muckler. pic.twitter.com/yTr8ytWfsr

— Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) January 5, 2021
Muckler joined the Oilers organization as an assistant coach in 1981 following two decades at various positions with the Vancouver Canucks and the New York Rangers, as well as a head coaching stint with the Minnesota North Stars in 1968-69.

He won his first Stanley Cup in 1984 as an assistant coach on the Oilers' staff and another in 1985. He was promoted to assistant head coach under Glen Sather. After two more Cup wins with the club in 1987 and 1988, Muckler was named head coach in 1989 and led the club to its fifth NHL title in seven years in 1990.

"On behalf of the Edmonton Oilers organization and John's many friends in the game of hockey, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to Audrey and the entire Muckler family," said Wayne Gretzky in a statement. "When you have 22 pretty good hockey players and have enjoyed some success it's hard imagine that the addition of an Associate Coach would be the final piece to getting the Edmonton Oilers to the top of the mountain, but that's exactly what happened when John joined the team.

He was tough, strict, but most importantly fair, and he helped lay the groundwork to make our team more accountable to each other which propelled us to become champions. A wonderful family man and great friend, he personally took my career to another level, and I will always cherish the hours we talked, from breaking down defenses to raising a family. Rest in peace, John, you will be missed."

Ontario allows Leafs and Sens to play in home arenas
The province of Ontario will allow the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs to play their home games this season in their respective arenas, Ontario Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Minister Lisa MacLeod announced on Thursday.

Canadiens can play home games during Quebec curfew
Ontario has given the green light for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators to play home games this season, all but finalizing the NHL's plan for an all-Canadian division.

Devils bring back Vatanen on one-year deal
The New Jersey Devils have signed defenceman Sami Vatanen to a one-year, $2 million contract. The 29-year-old scored five goals and 23 points in 47 games this past season split between the Carolina Hurricanes and Devils.

Bruins name Bergeron 20th captain
The Boston Bruins named Patrice Bergeron the 20th captain in franchise history on Thursday. Bergeron takes on the "C" after former captain Zdeno Chara signed with the Washington Capitals last week.

Zemgus Girgensons is out for the season for the Buffalo Sabres after having hamstring surgery Wednesday.

Girgensons was injured during a scrimmage Monday and is expected to need six months to recover. He was helped off the ice after falling awkwardly trying to check teammate Steven Fogarty.

mixed feelings - Sad to see Chara go (especially to a solid eastern team) but happy to see Bergeron wearing the 'C' (been with the Bruins since 2003).

Goalie Corey Crawford retires from NHL day after taking leave from Devils

Goaltender Corey Crawford has announced his retirement from the NHL after 10 seasons and two Stanley Cup championships.

Crawford, from Chateauguay, Que., posted a franchise-record 52 playoff wins and led the Blackhawks to Stanley Cup titles in 2013 and 2015.

In those championship years, he was the co-recipient of the William M. Jennings Trophy, awarded to the goaltender or goaltenders having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.

The six-foot-two, 216-pound netminder posted a 260-162-53 record, a 2.45 goals-against average and .918 save percentage over 488 NHL regular-season appearances, all with the Blackhawks.

"I have been fortunate to have had a long career playing professional hockey for a living," Crawford said in a statement. "I wanted to continue my career, but believe I've given all I can to the game of hockey, and I have decided that it is time to retire.

"I would like to thank the New Jersey Devils organization for understanding and supporting my decision. I would like to thank the Chicago Blackhawks organization for giving me the chance to live my childhood dream. I am proud to have been part of winning two Stanley Cups in Chicago."

The NHL played outdoors in the shadow of the Green Monster at Fenway Park, on consecutive days at Dodger Stadium and Yankee Stadium, and at Chicago's Soldier Field.

This year's outdoor games will be in a unique, picturesque setting: along the shores of Lake Tahoe.

The NHL announced Monday it will hold two games on an outdoor rink set up at Edgewood Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada.

Vegas will play Colorado on Feb. 20 and Boston faces Philadelphia on Feb. 21 on a temporary rink set up on the 18th hole at Edgewood, site of the annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

interesting that they did not schedule San Jose for this showcase
(they're really bringing Bos/PHL across the country for this?)
I'm bummed there will be no fans -
would be a lot of fun to watch an outdoor game nestled in the mountains up here

So, Florida Panthers defenceman Keith Yandle may be available.

TSN Senior Hockey Reporter Frank Seravalli reported this week that the 34-year-old blueliner has “fallen out of favour” with the Florida Panthers and will not factor into their plans this season. It’s a stunning rebuke of a talented, albeit aging player who has been a mainstay on the Florida back end since the 2016-17 regular season.

Yandle won’t be mistaken for a high-end defender at this point in his career, but to transition from top-four minutes to healthy scratch and the trade block in such short order is curious.

Just last season, Yandle was playing nearly 20 minutes a night – clear-cut second pairing usage, similar to that of Vancouver’s Chris Tanev (now with the Calgary Flames) or Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin, though down from previous years under new head coach Joel Quenneville.

From a roster-building perspective, managing Yandle out of the organization makes some degree of sense. He is no longer a $6.3-million-a-year-calibre player, and the idea of floating that contract for three more seasons – especially with a number of young defensive prospects prepared to make the jump – may be poisonous from an economics standpoint.

Pair that with Quenneville cutting Yandle’s ice time, and you have all of the ingredients for an ugly divorce.

^^^
I never saw Yandle as much more than a power play specialist
5 on 5 he's always a liability and if he's not lighting it up on the power play
....then he's just useless in a league where the average age of the players seems to be a decade younger
he does not have the speed to play the game today
