The NHL reintroduced stricter COVID-19 protocols Saturday that include daily testing and other steps in a bid to limit a growing outbreak among players and team personnel.

The enhanced protocols will be put into effect immediately and last through Jan. 1 with an evaluation of their impact no later than Jan. 7. The move follows discussions between the NHL and NHL Players’ Association as virus conditions worsen across North America.

Three teams — Calgary, Colorado and Florida — are virtually shut down through next week because of virus cases. Approximiately 70 players — 10% of the 700 league-wide — are in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol and the number of games postponed this season has climbed to 20.

Several Canadian provinces are now or will soon limit attendance at large events like NHL games to 50% of capacity.

Besides the daily testing for players and coaches, “additional pre-game testing may be implemented, on a case-by-case basis, when a COVID outbreak occurs within a team.”

The league said the omicron variant is responsible for the uptick in cases.

“Given the increased number of positive cases in our league within the last two weeks, and changing societal realities with the new omicron COVID-19 variant, the NHLPA and NHL have collectively agreed that all Clubs shall be required to follow enhanced preventative and detection measures,” the league said.

Moments after the announcement, Detroit placed three players, coach Jeff Blashill and assistant coach in protocol ahead of Saturday night's home game against New Jersey. The Red Wings have the only player in the league, , who is not vaccinated.

While postponed games may be rescheduled, all eyes on are the calendar: The NHL plans to allow its players to participate in the Winter Olympics in China in February — unless COVID-19 disruptions prove to be too much.

The NHL has until Jan. 10 to opt-out of the Winter Games without financial penalty, but retains the right to cancel its plans up until players are scheduled to travel to Beijing.

the players have to have that "come to Jesus" moment with regards to Olympic participation
go next time instead

this isn't the year for that - when a totalitarian government controls your entrance and more importantly the EXIT from their country... healthy athletes who contract the virus (asymptomatic) can be held for up to 4-5 weeks before they can exit... well STANLEY is a more important chase than a gold medal; especially to those who PAY you to play a child's game in the free world...

I think the league will negotiate that to the next round of games.... easily

The National Hockey League will institute a league-wide pause that will run from Wednesday through Dec. 25 after multiple games were postponed and teams were shut down due to a rise in positive COVID-19 cases.

The @NHL and @NHLPA have agreed to begin the Holiday Break after Tuesday’s games. Practices will resume on Dec. 26 and the League’s regular-season schedule will resume on Dec. 27. https://t.co/0Bmu8dlZ1M pic.twitter.com/JHbxtzMX6D

— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) December 21, 2021
Ten teams have already had all of their activities paused through the holiday break, as the Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs have all closed their practice facilities.

The break was originally scheduled to begin on Thursday and run through Boxing Day.

After Monday's game between the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars, two games remain on the schedule prior to the newly instituted pause. The Washington Capitals are set to visit the Philadelphia Flyers and the Vegas Golden Knights are scheduled to host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.

Players will return to their teams on Dec. 26 for testing, practice and/or travel. Any practice scheduled for Boxing Day must begin after 2pm local time.

No member of a team’s Travelling Party will be allowed to enter the facility without a negative COVID-19 test, unless they are entering for testing purposes.

The regular season will resume on Dec. 27.

And just like that :- :-

NHL players won't go to Beijing Olympics amid COVID-19 concerns: reports

The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association have reached an agreement to not send its players to participate in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in February, according to reports from The Toronto Star's Chris Johnston and Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli.

According to Johnston, the league and its players made the decision on Tuesday and now must finalize it with the International Olympic Committee. Seravalli reported on Twitter the official announcement could come as early as Tuesday or even later in the week. The league had until Jan. 10 to opt out of the Olympics without financial penalty.

CBC Sports has not been able to independently confirm the report.

The news comes a day after the league announced the season would be shut down for its holiday break a day early, and pause activities from Dec. 21-25. Ten teams have been shut down amid COVID-19 outbreaks and a total of 50 games have been postponed this season.

Johnston reported the league made the decision based on the need to reschedule games during the three-week break it would have had for the Olympics, scheduled to start Feb. 4.

ESPN reported those could include currently postponed games or even moving up future games as a result of the lack of arena availability during the break, with many booking concerts and other events.

The Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers game scheduled for Tuesday was postponed by the NHL because of COVID-19 concerns.

It brings the total of games postponed this season to 50, including 32 this week. The NHL and NHL Players' Association agreed Monday to postpone five games Thursday, the day before the holiday break was scheduled to begin.

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 Tuesday in the final NHL game until Dec. 27.

With four games scheduled Wednesday already postponed because of COVID-19 concerns, the holiday break began after the Lightning-Golden Knights game. Under the revised schedule, all teams will be off from Wednesday to Saturday, including travel.

"I just think there's a lot of teams that are in a position or have to shut down. I would've preferred to keep playing," Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said Tuesday. "You look at our two games (against the New Jersey Devils and Flyers scheduled for this week) and the teams' situations, possibly could have kept playing. But it's not up to us. So try to make the most of the break here and get ready."

On Monday, the NHL announced the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens would be shut down through the holiday break. They were the eighth and ninth teams to be shut down through the break, joining the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers.

On Sunday, the NHL announced that cross-border games would be postponed through the break, a decision made due to "the fluid nature of federal travel restrictions."

Players will report back to their team Sunday, which shall be used for testing, practice and/or travel only. Upon return from the holiday break to team facilities, no individual in the team's traveling party can enter the facility (other than for testing purposes) until they have a negative test result. Any practice scheduled for Sunday must begin after 2 p.m. local time.

There are 14 games on the NHL schedule Monday.

The NHL announced new protocols for teams and players Saturday and is in the process of reviewing and revising the regular-season schedule.

"There's nothing we can do about it," Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn said after a 7-4 win against the Minnesota Wild on Monday. "I think the most important thing is the health and safety of the players and coaches and everyone involved with the organizations.

"Just taking it day by day. Hopefully the numbers go down and we can get back to hockey after Christmas."

Because of the games that have been postponed this season and the continuing uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, the NHL and NHLPA were actively discussing whether players should participate in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. An announcement was expected in the coming days.

The NHL had 55 games postponed last season; all were made up as part of a 56-game schedule.

During a seven-day stretch of bad news that included a COVID-19 team outbreak and reduced capacity at games in the Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary Flames fans received perhaps their biggest blow on Tuesday evening.

Just weeks before shovels were supposed to be in the ground on an events centre that would have included a new 18,000 seat arena for the National Hockey League’s Flames, the deal has fallen through, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.

The event centre, which would have been situated in the same location as the Saddledome in the city’s Victoria Park district, was estimated to have cost $608.5 million and taken three years to construct.

If everything were to have gone to plan, the Flames would have taken the ice in their new home at the start of the 2024-25 NHL season.

According to the most recent project agreement from July 30, 2021, the city of Calgary was set to pay a maximum of $287.5 million, or roughly 47 per cent of the total cost. The Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), the Flames’ ownership group, had agreed to cover the remainder of the costs. The city and CSEC would then have been responsible for different cost overruns. The cost overruns for CSEC are estimated to hit $9.7 million to cover expenses related to sidewalks, transportation, climate risk, and photovoltaic capacity.

CSEC wanted the city to share in part of that $9.7 million, which is 1.6 per cent of the complex’s estimated cost.

“According to that contract, the city can’t come back with additional funding,” Gondek told reporters on Tuesday.

“We have, however, tried to ensure that any roadwork that is the responsibility of the city would be funded by the city.”

On Tuesday, CSEC’s primary shareholder, Murray Edwards, informed Gondek that the Flames were unable to assume those extra costs.

“[Edwards] has tried his best to get his partners to keep moving forward with the events centre deal,” she told reporters at city hall.

“There was additional funding that had to be taken on by Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. It appears that they are unable to make that financial commitment…it would appear that they are ending the deal.”

Gondek attributed the cost overruns to inflation and supply chain challenges. She also said that the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation’s removal as the project manager could have played a role how things unfolded. While the CMLC was set to manage the project when the arena was initially agreed to in July of 2019, they were removed in the July 2021 agreement at CSEC's request.

“To have a development manager like that who has run major projects in the city on time and on budget would have been a benefit to the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation,” she said.

“In my opinion, they had the expertise to understand that there would have been further costs required around improvements. They probably would have indicated that you need to be aware of climate-related costs, and I think this may have been stewarded differently.”

Gondek was asked if, during her call with him today, Edwards threatened to relocate the Flames, to which she simply replied that it was a “straightforward conversation.”

According to Forbes, Edwards’ net worth is $2 billion (US).

Early Wednesday morning, CSEC responded in a statement saying "there is is no viable path to complete the Event Centre Project."

"While CSEC was prepared to move forward in the face of escalating construction costs and assume the unknown future cost risks, CSEC was not prepared to fund the infrastructure and climate costs that were introduced by the City following our July agreement and were not included in the $608.5 million and are not included in the current cost estimate of $634 million," CSEC said in the statement.

"The failure of the City and CSEC to find a viable path forward was not based upon simply the "the last dollar" on the table; but rather was based upon the accumulated increase in CSEC's share of the costs, including the infrastructure and climate costs, the overall risk factors related to the Project and the inability of CSEC and the City to find a path forward that would work for both parties."

According to CSEC, the most recent cost estimates have the total cost of the Event Centre at $634 million, meaning CSEC would be responsible for an additional $25.5 million of cost.

"The resulting cost sharing would have been $346.5 million for CSEC and $287.5 million for the City and, CSEC would continue to be responsible for further cost increases related to the construction of the Event Centre," the statement said. "Unfortunately, there are now $19 million of new cost items related to infrastructure and climate being insisted upon by the City for which they are seeking an additional $10 million in funding from CSEC."

The Saddledome opened in 1983 and is the NHL’s second-oldest arena.

Like many Flames fans who envisioned a new era for the team in a world-class facility, Gondek herself was surprised by the turn in events.

“What happens next will unfold over the next few days,” she said.

“The weight of this has been heavy for Calgarians and we are just trying to process what happens next.”
