Re: It's a great day for hockey 2021-2022
Majority of Flames roster now in COVID protocol
At this point, it’s easier to mention the Calgary Flames who are not in COVID protocol.
The team announced Wednesday that 17 members of the organization were added to the protocol and will be out at least 10 days, including head coach Darryl Sutter, associate coach Kirk Muller, star forward Johnny Gaudreau and goalie Jacob Markstrom, along with some staff members.
There are currently 16 Flames players in the protocol – only Oliver Kylington, Matthew Tkachuk, Dan Vladar, Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube, Michael Stone, and Mikael Backlund remain off the list.
The situation with the Flames and COVID cases across the league is evolving by the minute.
Flames games were postponed through Dec. 16 as of Wednesday morning, although the league is likely going to announce further schedule changes for the team. Saturday’s game at the Saddledome versus the Columbus Blue Jackets is likely to be postponed.
Not surprisingly, I'm told that Saturday's game for the Flames at home vs the Columbus Blue Jackets will be postponed, with more to follow.
Sounds like 's return to the Saddledome may not happen on Dec. 23.

Flames fans hoping to salute former captain Mark Giordano, who is slated to return to the Saddledome with the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 23, will likely have to wait, as it is expected Calgary will not take the ice until after Christmas.
On Tuesday, Flames general manager Brad Treliving walked media through the decision to cancel their flight to Chicago on Sunday after the team received its first positive tests late Saturday night.
“We made the decision to hold our flight up and delay it a little bit until we got the confirmation of the remaining tests,” Treliving said. “After a couple of hours [on Sunday], we let the players go home…we even looked at rescheduling the flight for Monday morning.”
Whenever Calgary does take the ice again, the team could still be without several key players.
Players in protocol are required to miss at least 10 days of action, provided they continue to test negative and show no symptoms.
Calgary’s outbreak shows the challenges teams face with having to wait hours for PCR test results.
The Flames tested their players on Saturday afternoon before their game versus the Boston Bruins and in advance of crossing the border to Chicago the following day. That game versus the Bruins went ahead as scheduled, but the Flames received some positive COVID tests later that night.
Now, 19 players who suited up on Saturday night (16 Flames, as well as Bruins’ forwards Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and Craig Smith) are in the league’s COVID protocols.
The NHL’s current COVID guidelines do not go into detail on possible in-game transmission and, as of Tuesday, had not spoken to the Flames about in-game transmission.
The league did not respond to questions from TSN about the Flames outbreak.

HERE WE FUCKIN GO AGAIN
The new COVID-19 surge is impacting sports fans in Ontario.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors plus the Ottawa Senators will see their venue capacity reduced to 50 per cent at home games starting Saturday.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled the new rules on Wednesday amid the rise of cases and the new Omicron variant.
"This measure is being taken to reduce opportunities for close contact in high-risk indoor settings with large crowds and when masks are not always worn," the Ontario government said in a release.

Re: It's a great day for hockey 2021-2022
This guy is just pure class
Maurice resigns as Jets coach, was in ninth season with Winnipeg
Said players 'need a new voice'; Lowry will be behind bench for rest of season
Paul Maurice resigned as coach of the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.
Maurice was in his ninth season with Winnipeg. The 54-year-old was 315-223-62 in 600 games, including 13-10-5 this season.
"They need a new voice," Maurice said. "They need somebody to help them get to that next place. ... It's the right time for it, and I know that.
"I'm so attached to this group, and I know they need sometthing new."
When asked what it was they needed, Maurice joked, "You know what? That's not my job anymore."
Dave Lowry, who was one of Maurice's assistants, will coach the Jets the rest of the season, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said. The Jets host the Washington Capitals on Friday (8 p.m. ET; TSN3, NBCSWA, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).
Maurice is sixth in NHL history with 775 wins and fourth in games coached with 1,684, behind Scotty Bowman (2,141), Joel Quenneville (1,768) and Barry Trotz (1,755).
The Jets qualified for the postseason the past four seasons, including reaching the Western Conference Final in 2018. Last season they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games in the best-of-7 Stanley Cup Second Round.
"There is a shelf life for what we do. The only way that shelf life gets extended is if you can win championships," Maurice said. "You need to win."
In 24 seasons with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Jets, he is 775-680-130 with 99 ties, and 41-51 in 92 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He coached the Hurricanes to the 2002 Stanley Cup Final, where they lost in five games to the Detroit Red Wings.
Maurice, at 28 years old, became the second-youngest coach in NHL history when he replaced Paul Holmgren as coach of the Whalers on Nov. 7, 1995. He was fired Dec. 14, 2003, 30 games into his ninth season.
He coached the Maple Leafs for two seasons (2006-08) before returning to the Hurricanes, replacing Peter Laviolette on Dec. 3, 2008.
The Hurricanes missed the playoffs in his first three seasons, and he was fired Nov. 28, 2011, 25 games into his fourth season.
He was hired by the Jets on Jan. 12, 2014, replacing Claude Noel.
"I love these guys. I love this place. I know that it's time," Maurice said. "And that's a good thing for the Jets. It's also a really, really good thing for me."
In addition to his NHL success, Maurice won an Ontario Hockey League championship with the Detroit Junior Red Wings in 1994-95, and was an assistant to Ralph Kruger on Team Europe, which finished second at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Maurice said he's not sure if we will coach again.
"The only way I would step back again is if I felt like I'd be even better than I was before, and that's not today," Maurice said.
