My solo piano Garcia songs project

Post by berkDOG » Thu Jun 11, 2015 12:18 pm

Hello fellow Jerry Garcia fans. As you all know, this is the year of the Grateful Dead, and as a musician and deadhead for more than half of my life (I turn 30 in a few weeks), I've spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime . . .

No, in all seriousness, I have been jamming Dead tunes since high school and have seen countless Dead-related shows since then as well. Never saw the fat man, but have such reverence for his playing and songcraft that I feel it has influenced me more than any living musician. So, as I enter my 30s, I made a promise to myself to get out and gig more (haven't in a few years) and one such project will be me playing the songs that Jerry sang in the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band, and his other side-projects on solo piano.

In the coming months, I will be posting youtube videos of my versions of these songs in this thread and will have a Facebook and Soundcloud page up and running shortly as well. My goal is to have 30 songs up in the next 6 months and some gigs under my belt at local cafes and bars in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. If it all goes well, and I am still digging it, I will continue this project into 2016 and post another 30 more.

Here are my first 2 recordings, done today -

Ship of Fools:

Dire Wolf:

Next up in the coming days will be the Rose trilogy (Ramble on Rose, It Must Have Been the Roses, and Run for the Roses).

ENJOY!

Lastly, for those of you who may be interested in my original music, I also have a new original band called West Coast Syndicate.

Very enjoyable. Maybe bring up the tempo on "Ship" just a little.

Thanks for the advice, was just at a Dark Star show where they recreated a March 1977 show and did it at a dirge like pace and found it rather intriguing.

20 years . . . wow. I was just a newly minted 10 year old finishing my first year of summer camp. All of the counselors held a vigil in memory that I can only vaguely remember. I had no idea the magnitude of this man's music and legacy, and how it would greatly shape and impact the direction my life.

Thanks Jerry for the music. Thanks for the inspiration. Thanks for the love.

Please give me Facebook page a visit if you are so kind and want to hear my versions of Jerry tunes played on the piano.

I like Run for the Roses! Even better than the other two that I listened to. I especially like the verse you play at 2:30 where you let the piano take the melody, with a little bit of ad-lib on the right hand! Keep this project alive!

Im a big U2 fan. Not super happy about the way this was released. A little embarrassing. Ive been anticipating this album for a few years. I like it. Dont love it yet, but its awesome to have new U2 music.
