Review of Sphere

Post by flJen » Mon Jun 10, 2024 10:33 am

Pros:
Sphere is very cool
Graphics were outstanding
No one blocking your view, especially if you’re short like me and usually have an obstructed view at any show
When the band are shown on screen you can see all their details
Sound is good
Indoor walk in the air conditioning
No one cares if you vape pot
Weed dispo nearby open 24 hours including consumption lounge

Cons
The seats are ICY cold, do not wear sandals shorts or sleeveless tops- you will regret it and have to buy a $100 hoodie to keep from shivering
Any seat in 100 section beyond row 20 has obstructed view of screen
The walk is long! Wear comfortable shoes.
The floor/GA otoh is hot
BW eye color used to be dark brown now looks grey as if he has cataracts
Seemed to be band didn’t play as usual from grief of Walton
The hotel package sucks.
The casino has indoor cigarette smoking and it stinks
There is no frig or coffee maker in room, nowhere to chill your booze and drinks
No coffee maker- go downstairs walk forever and wait in line
You will wait in line for everything
You will pay daily resort fee and never get to use spa
Everything costs extra and it’s expensive
It’s triple digits weather
You will never get a seat at the pools all chairs marked reserved
Want 2 drinks at pool? $50 while you stand in crowded hot pool water
It never went under 100 degrees even at night.
I will never return to the Venetian.

I’m happy to answer any questions from my experience. AMA anything venue or show related.

Consumption Lounges?

:-k
I live in NV and was under the understanding only the Piute's had one
It's about time

We have a great dispensary here up north (Sol) run by an old head
He's been dyin' to get consumption going - he even built a kitchen in the dispensary
to serve infused food once consumption is legal here :-k :-k

maybe it's Washoe county holding back now

gotta investigate
Till They Put Me Under
It's Festival Time

I was at the shows this weekend. We had a blast. While I appreciate the review just like anything else it's all come down to a personal opinion. Like it's hot it Vegas in June. Really? My crew didn't think it was so bad and we spent each day at the pool (not at Venetian). I wouldn't want to be digging a ditch in 108 degree heat but sitting by a pool was fine.

These shows are definitely the most polarizing thing in GD family history with so much bitching going on depending on who you are. If you like to have a good time and can swing it, It's a fun trip to make. But some of the message boards are just filled with complaints with everything from too many people smoking pot inside the venue (another head scratcher, my god, people smoking at a dead related event) to the price of drinks. I stayed across the street in a suite for $139 a night and had a refrigerator to store my own beverages. You just gotta poke around. There's a million places to stay in Vegas without breaking the bank. If you can swing it, just go to the show. It's something different and Bob and Mickey will not be around forever.

Great review.

We also found the venue to be on the cold side but some seats were significantly worse. Out of four nights (so far), two were tolerable and two were unbearable. With the AC blowing directly on us my wife was shivering.

Also found that it was very easy to hear conversations behind you. Even moderate chatting was distracting. Assuming this is from the row-to-row height difference.

Entry from the Venetian resulted with far less time waiting in the heat as compared to entering from the Plaza side.

I love reading about all of your different experiences. Thank you everyone for sharing your opinions. And yes.......it comes down to personal opinion........it's different if you're there (particularly w/regard to Sphere)......these things are inferred at this point.

I'd love to read more.

Did you guys enjoy the sonically-triggered seats during drums? At other times during the shows too?

Has there been a lot of improv/off-the-chart jamming? How have these moments been musically and visually?!?

This is really my only question - and I'd love to hear more about this!

They want you to go downstairs "for coffee" because once you're downstairs you may be tempted to gamble!

Thanks for the great reviews - I do appreciate reading about the whole experience, too.

I was at the Venetian -

Besides Starbucks, there was excellent coffee at a variety of places with no lines

There are pools that were not crowded, particularly a 10th floor rooftop garden pool

Gosh, its hot in the dessert in June, fair enough

I was at the Jun 6 and 7th shows - the June 7th show was quite jammed out, with a shockingly great setlist

Thanks to reading tips here and on Facebook, I knew to bring a long sleeve tshirt and wear cargo pants instead of shorts - and that was fine!

I was in 303 for the first night (very good), and 307 for eh next night (couldn't be better)

...stayed at Harrahs ~ yeah they had a keurig in room but had a little buy stand next to it that you had to buy the pods at 6 for 20 some dollars...we just hit Target and bought a box, along with snacks that ran bookoo amount of money from their lil' stand. Fridge was a nice plus. Still say taxi is best way to go ~ drops ya right off at steps to go up to entrance...but took us about a half hour wait to get one back ~ could probably hit roadside and get one faster

I only noticed the seats vibrating during drums. Although they are a cool addition to drums, I would rather dance to the music.

During ‘A Postcard from Earth’ the vibrating seats were more entertaining because the content is not improv and you are sitting the entire time.

Regarding the band, the music I have heard so far has been top notch.

Exactly. Often you have walk across the casino floor to get to the Starbucks.

I did enjoy drums and space in these seats. (normally not a huge fan)They vibrate and I swear I felt like they were warming at times, but only along your spine.

More casino hotels have added Keurigs to the rooms. Probably too many complaints. They also increased TV channels. For years those two were non existent. No coffee and nothing on TV. Regular hotels always had coffee makers and more on TV. Mini fridge to.

I can take coffee or leave it, so easy for me to say....how hard can it be to get a cup of coffee in the United States?

Anyway, I avoided the Venetian because I didn't want to be at ground zero. Stayed Fontainbleau and it was great.

We went the weekend of May 30. A splendid time was had by all.

Some thoughts.

To the MUSIC. It was really good Dead&Company. The setlists, especially the first two nights, happened to be pretty perfect for me. I mean, Iko>Eyes out the gate is pretty sick, and a second set Ripple opener... well...... Walton was in the house. Eyes Jam was pretty solid and the Estimated, which I thought was weaving into the Other one, dipped into Mr Charlie, which was cool but kind of abrupt, then into Help>S>Franklins, and the jam was really good.
Night two was the top night for me. The Playin’ in set one was well jammed with what seemed like a long jam clocking in at about 15 minutes. Lots of interplay here. Set two shined start to end. (Uncle Johns>China>Rider>Dark Star) was sick. This clicked- ALL of it, and the Dark Star went to some cool places (just under 20 minutes on that alone). They are spacing into slow tunes which is cool and allows them to build the tune. We got standing on the moon, stella blue and dear prudence out of space, all three spectacular. They then has the BIGGIE placement followed by a slow tune to end the set. This is unusual (I think). And I’m pretty sure the slow tune to end the set is because it’s easier for them to land (trying to avoid spoilers).
ANYWAY, The music was really good. I thought night three (June 1) was the weakest, but sometimes that’s me on night three just being on not quite a full tank. People either like this group of players or they don’t. If you do, this is some good stuff.

To the PLACE.

The Sphere is the best indoor venue I’ve ever been in. Outdoor venues are different and I’m not going to try to compare the Greek, Red Rocks, Cuthburt or lots of others to this place. The SOUND is just incredible. We were in section 107, row 21. And it was just PERFECT. One weird thing that took some getting used to- the sound doesn’t bounce around the room. It is absorbed by the place, which allows the exact thing happening this second to be hear at all levels – I could focus on any one player and groove it, or just let the whole roll over me. BUT, we’re used to sound bouncing around in hockey rinks, Sheds blasting to the lawn and stadiums with monster stacks and repeaters all pushing BIG SOUND around the place. The Sphere absorbs all that sound and so, while everything is perfectly clear, it loses some of the PUNCH. This is not a complaint, as the sound is just SOOOoooo good, but it took a little getting used to. I think this also makes for a challenge for the tapers (bless them all). You can’t see a speaker stack in the sphere because 1) they’re hidden, and 2) they’re everywhere. Where does one even point a mic? Dunno. Hoping for SBDS at some point, but my hunch is that will be a challenge because thie place isn’t right/left, it’s DIALED IN. As for the seats. Whatever. It seemed to vibrate during drums, by we fucking shake stadium decks and make the floor of MSG bounce, so……

The SCREENS. Very trippy stuff. Very cool. Not trying to spoil anything, but the fucking place FLIES. I do get that at one point the dancing bears got laughingly overdone, but hey, it was over pretty quick and a lot of the folks around us loved it. And we just laughed. It did seem that most of the videos had a start and an end point – the latter usually just fading into the next one- but that there was a middle section that they could just hit “play” and it would do its thing while the band jammed a 15 minute playin or 20 minute dark star, then hit “next” and it would sequence into whatever they had queued next. While some video repeated there was new and different videos each night and some of the repeating videos were tweaked when redone. All in all it was big fun watching. Of course, doe we really need a ten story image of mickeys face?

VEGAS.

Hot. We stayed up and off the strip at a Spring Hills Suites on Paradise road. Free breakfast, SMALL rooftop pool with great view of sphere- we got a sphere view room. Not crowded. Got a rental car and parked at Treasure Island for free. A couple of times they asked what brought us – just say you’re meeting friends at Gillies (good burger). We avoided the Venetian as much as possible because 1) crowded and 2) Expensive. I get that being close is nice but I’m CHEAP. We had GREAT food up at the Sahara (free parking, nice restaurants). My wife (not a head) and I saw the Beatle Love the night we flew in and it was GREAT. Go if you can swing it. It’s closing soon. Ringo Star was in town while we were there so she swung over and caught him and said it was a ball. Didn’t gamble other than pulling a few slots. Did an out of town day to Vally of Fire state park. If you like rock, try to swing it nice desert excursion.

In all we had a fucking blast. You milage can and will vary, but this is indeed a fun run.

New years anyone?

Oh, I forgot to mention, I took to bringing my own portable coffee pot a long time ago. That way I have my own beans and brew whenever for free and don't have to leave the room. And my wife can use it to heat water for tea. We use this one:

Thank you for these reviews. I love Vegas but it is not for everyone. I only play poker when I go and Vegas is the center of the universe for poker!! Especially in June and July when they run the World Series of Poker. I’m surprised there are not more poker players on this board. I play tournaments in Philly with a lot of Heads. Anyway I’m really pumped to be able to go to shows at the Sphere when I am at the WSOP this year. Plus I get to see the Stones twice in LA on the same trip. Gonna be a great 4th of July this year. Hopefully I do well in the tournament I’m playing in between the Dead and the Stones.

Thanks Friki! That's a great all around review. Especially the sound. It's hard to tell from the recordings, but your take on it is spot on. If I ever get a chance to get to a show, I would probably use omni mics and multi channel. Had Phish taper tickets and had to sell last minute.👎
