NHL statement on Coyotes' minority owner Barroway

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League today issued the following statement regarding Arizona Coyotes' minority owner Andrew Barroway:

"The National Hockey League is aware of the arrest of Arizona Coyotes' minority owner Andrew Barroway. Pending further information, he has been suspended indefinitely."

The NHL has suspended Arizona Coyotes minority owner Andrew Barroway indefinitely after he was arrested on a felony strangulation charge in Aspen, Colorado on Thursday.

Rick Carroll of the Aspen Daily News laid out the array of charges Barroway faces from an altercation with his wife that went from “verbal to physical.” A second-degree assault charge related to strangulation is a Class 4 felony. In addition to that charge, he faces a third-degree assault charge, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

A court order prohibits the 57-year-old from making contact with his wife, unless it involves their children, and from consuming alcohol.

The league clarified that it’s aware of the Barroway arrest, and that he’s been suspended pending further investigation.

"The National Hockey League is aware of the arrest of Arizona Coyotes' minority owner Andrew Barroway. Pending further information, he has been suspended indefinitely," the NHL's statement read.

Meanwhile, the Coyotes pointed to an eventual “appropriate response” to the situation in a statement of their own.

“We are aware of the allegation regarding Mr. Barroway and we are working with the League to gather more information. When we have enough information, we will have an appropriate response. Until the investigation is complete, we will have no further comment.”

Barroway became the Coyotes’ majority owner in 2014, but eventually sold controlling interest in the Coyotes to Alex Meruelo in 2019. It’s believed that Barroway maintains about a five percent stake in the team.
