Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson will miss out on his first NHL All-Star Game appearance, sidelined by a dirty hit from Sabres goaltender Aaron Dell on Tuesday night.

Dell elbowed Batherson as he was chasing a player around the back of the net in the first period of a 5-0 Senators win. Batherson suffered an ankle injury, falling into the boards. Dell will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety as a result of the play, while Batherson is out long-term.

“It’s a bad play by the goalie,” Senators coach D.J. Smith told reporters. “He’s done it before.”

The NHL named Brady Tkachuk as Batherson’s replacement for the All-Star game.

“Quite frankly, it was just a bulls–t play,” Tkachuk said. “What happened was unnecessary and dirty. You just feel for [Drake]. He’s put in so much work to get to where he’s at. It definitely sucks.”

Dell has a history of taking cheap shots, having made a similar play on Mark Stone while with the Sharks in 2019. He also took an interference penalty a couple of weeks ago against Nashville, and swung his skate at Calgary’s Sam Bennett

“I see replays of him at other times, running out and hitting players,” Smith said. “It’s a pattern.”

The Senators were uniformly outraged by Dell. The ex-Devils goalie said he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone and hoped Batherson was OK.

“I don’t like calling out other goalies, but [a player] is not expecting to get hit by a goalie,” Senators netminder Matt Murray said. “Just like when a goalie comes out to play the puck, you can’t hit him. I just thought it was a dangerous play that turned out to be a really unfortunate result.”

The Buffalo Sabres' injury-depleted goalie ranks were thinned further on Wednesday after the NHL issued Aaron Dell a three-game suspension for body-checking Ottawa forward Drake Batherson into the end boards.

In determining the length of the suspension, the NHL took into account that Batherson suffered an ankle injury after being shoved by Dell late in the first period of Ottawa's 5-0 win on Tuesday night.

Buffalo is already missing four goalies due to injury. Dell's suspension means the team will likely need to sign another netminder before leaving for a three-game western swing starting at Arizona on Saturday.

The play happened shortly after Tyler Ennis scored to put the Senators up 3-0.

Dell played a dump-in to the right of his net, leaving the puck for defenceman Mattias Samuelsson. With Batherson closing in from behind Samuelsson, Dell stepped into the Senators player's path and struck him with his shoulder.

Evander Kane, the embattled NHL veteran whose contract with the San Jose Sharks was terminated earlier this month, is set to sign with the Edmonton Oilers, multiple reports said Thursday.

The deal would be for one year and the veteran minimum of $750,000 US, with a signing bonus and a full no-movement clause, Sportsnet reported.

CBC Sports has not independently confirmed the report.

The signing hinged on the results of an investigation into an alleged breach of COVID-19 protocol that marked the final straw for Kane's tenure in San Jose.

The league concluded the investigation Thursday and found that there was insufficient evidence that he lied about his COVID-19 status when travelling during the holiday period.

The independent investigation was conducted by law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler.

Their report says there was not enough evidence to find that Kane "knowingly made misrepresentations regarding his COVID-19 status or test results" when travelling.
