Re: It's a great day for hockey 2021-2022
Armstrong had most of Team Canada picked before NHL's Olympic opt-out
Doug Armstrong said 70 percent of the work had been done. Only eight or nine spots on Canada’s Olympic men’s hockey squad were yet to be decided.
And then, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association pulled the plug on NHL participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics due to COVID concerns.
“The players in the league were committed to seeing best-on-best competition,” Armstrong told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday. “But with the latest surge and the cancellation of games, the uncertainty of what’s ahead of us — I certainly support and understand both the PA and the league’s decision.”
Few have put in as much work on Olympic hockey in the past 10 months than Armstrong, the Blues’ general manager who was named as GM of the Canadian Olympic team last February.
The team selection process, Armstrong said, “evolves watching young players get better, it evolves with watching veteran players fight off father time. And you just watch hockey and talk hockey, and watch hockey and talk hockey.
“And then layers get added to the group, which is the fun part of it. You start with management, and then you add in the coaches, then you add in the support staff — the trainers, the PR people, and you’re connecting with different people throughout the whole process. That’s a silver lining here. A lot of those great friendships that are made at these events at least started.”
Unfortunately, COVID kept Armstrong and the rest of the NHL involvement in the Olympics from reaching the finish line.
“This last month was gonna be a big scouting month for all of us to round out the group and get our coaches involved,” Armstrong said. “We probably had eight or nine more players to pick out of 14 or 15 (candidates). So it was getting down to the nitty-gritty.”
The 25-man squad was to be announced on Jan. 12. Armstrong said several Blues were in contention for a spot on the team.
“Yeah, we had a handful of guys on the long list,” he said. “They were playing well. There’d be some tough decisions to be made for everyone. The group that we had put on our long list got real positive responses from guys from around the league.”
But with the NHL no longer involved in the Olympics, Armstrong’s work in the process is done. It is up to others now to pick a collection of players from the college ranks, European leagues, or the American Hockey League for a new Team Canada — and pick it quickly.
And that means Armstrong is back exclusively to his day job running the Blues.

2022 World Junior Championship schedule
United States seeking to win back-to-back titles at tournament, which starts Dec. 26
The United States will play Slovakia on Dec. 26, one of four games scheduled for the first day of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The 10-team tournament will be held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
The United States, which defeated Canada 2-0 in the championship game in 2021, seeks to win back-to-back titles for the first time. The last team to do so was Canada, which won the last of five straight in 2009.
The United States will play preliminary-round games at WP Centrium in Red Deer in Group B with Russia, Sweden, Slovakia and Switzerland. Canada will play at Rogers Place in Edmonton in Group A, with Finland, Czechia, Germany and Austria.
The top four teams in each group will play in the quarterfinals Jan. 2. The semifinals are Jan. 4, and the championship and third-place games are Jan. 5.
After opening against Slovakia (9:30 p.m. ET), the United States will play Switzerland on Dec. 28 (4:30 p.m. ET), Sweden on Dec. 29 (9:30 p.m. ET), and Russia on Dec. 31 (9:30 p.m. ET).
The United States has won the championship five times.
"It's the difficulty of beating a team twice in a tournament," U.S. general manager John Vanbiesbrouck said. "Bob Motzko returned as coach the year after winning gold (in 2017), did a fantastic job, but fell a bit short (third place in 2018). Repeating is very difficult, but we can't focus on one set thing. We can't say we did it this way and need to do it that way again. We have to adapt ... we might have to do it a different way."
Canada plays its opening game against Czechia on Dec. 26 (7 p.m. ET).
All games will be broadcast on NHL Network in the United States and TSN and RDS in Canada.

Re: It's a great day for hockey 2021-2022
TNT is ready to televise the Winter Classic, the NHL’s showcase regular-season game, for the first time and like predecessor NBC it is going all-out for the league’s outdoor New Year’s Day game.
Before the Blues play the Minnesota Wild at 6 p.m. CT Saturday at Target Field in Minneapolis, home of baseball’s Minnesota Twins, TNT has an hour-long pregame show planned. It features Hockey Hall of Famer and former Blue Wayne Gretzky, as well as Rick Tocchet, Anson Carter, Paul Bissonnette and Liam McHugh.
They will be broadcasting from a warm studio in Atlanta. That won’t be the case in Minnesota.
That scene-setting program is to conclude with rock band Dirty Honey doing a cover of “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince, the late famed musician and Minneapolis native. The recorded performance took place on a frozen lake in Minnesota.
Then it’s time for the game, which is to be played on a night when the day’s high temperature is forecast to be -2 degrees and the low -20 degrees. Kenny Albert has the play-by-play assignment, his first time in that role on TV for a Winter Classic, and Blues announcer Darren Pang will be one of the analysts. Others are Eddie Olczyk, Keith Jones and Jennifer Botterill.
Blues radio broadcasters Chris Kerber and Joey Vitale also are to be on hand for the teeth-chattering game. Their broadcast airs on WXOS (101.1 FM) and is to include interviews with personnel as they leave the ice after each period. Their pregame show might begin a bit earlier than normal, depending on when lead-in college football bowl broadcasting ends.

Winter Classic became most-watched NHL regular-season game on cable with nearly 1.4 million viewers
The 2022 Winter Classic on New Year's Day became the most-watched cable NHL regular-season game of all time. The TNT broadcast drew 1.362 million viewers, which also makes it the most-watched NHL game thus far for the 2021-22 season on any network.
It surpassed a regular-season game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers game on Dec.12, 2000, which drew 1.356 million viewers. In 2020, the last time the Winter Classic was held, the game drew 1.96 million viewers on NBC — then its lowest viewership since the event premiered in 2008.
The St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild 6-4 at Target Field in this year's edition. With temperatures of minus 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit, it was the coldest game in NHL history.

Vegas looks scary good
they can play each type of game and come at you wave after wave
shift after shift
when (if) Eichel begins to play; if he's even 75% of what he had been
this team could be even better and more complete than they seem to believe
(cap issues )
I don't see much weakness or flaw in their game except for maybe in the crease
if they get good goaltending down the stretch and into the tournament

FINAL: Blackhawks win 2-1. Marc-André Fleury stops 30 of 31 shots as the Blackhawks bounce back from a loss to the last-place Coyotes with a win over the first-place Knights. There was one penalty in the entire game, and it went against Vegas.
